MARRIAGE: In Lexington Morning Transcript, July 27, 1887 (p.1, col.7), the
following story appeared:

An Elopement

On Monday night Mr. Charles McCarty eloped with Miss Annie Garland, daughter
of councilman R. Garland, all of the parties being of this city. Mr. McCarty
is about twenty-one years old and is employed in the business house of
Houlihan & Bro. He came here from Maysville a little over a year ago and
lived for one year in the family of Mr. Garland, and since then has boarded
with Mrs. Nicholson on East Short St. Monday he told Mrs. Nicholson that he
was going to have a lady for a roommate and arranged for 'muffins and coffee
for two.'

Mrs. McCarty, supposing them to have been married, is about sixteen years old
and is said to be very pretty, and a lady of good taste says 'she is very
sweet.' Mr. McCarty is said to be good-looking. They went to Aberdeen, which
being just opposite to Mr. McCarthy's home, was familiar to him.
(Note: she was not only sixteen; she must have been 22, and Charles about 23.).
