According to email message from Patty Sue Baker, who is married to a descendant of Richard--Gerald O'Connell), Annie was born on Feb.9, 1866 Lexington City Directory: Garland, Annie, r 151 E. Main The marriage of Annie and Charles in 1887 was described in a newspaper article (below). In 1900, they are shown living together in Lexington, married for 11 years and childless. After that only Annie is found, as housekeeper to a priest in both 1910 and 1920, though she still is classified as married. In 1930, she is living with a nephew, Leonard Garland, and is widowed. Short St., Line 51: Garland, Leonard NOTE: Not found in 1920 census MARRIAGE: In Lexington Morning Transcript, July 27, 1887 (p.1, col.7), the following story appeared: An Elopement On Monday night Mr. Charles McCarty eloped with Miss Annie Garland, daughter of councilman R. Garland, all of the parties being of this city. Mr. McCarty is about twenty-one years old and is employed in the business house of Houlihan & Bro. He came here from Maysville a little over a year ago and lived for one year in the family of Mr. Garland, and since then has boarded with Mrs. Nicholson on East Short St. Monday he told Mrs. Nicholson that he was going to have a lady for a roommate and arranged for 'muffins and coffee for two.' Mrs. McCarty, supposing them to have been married, is about sixteen years old and is said to be very pretty, and a lady of good taste says 'she is very sweet.' Mr. McCarty is said to be good-looking. They went to Aberdeen, which being just opposite to Mr. McCarthy's home, was familiar to him. (Note: she was not only sixteen; she must have been 22, and Charles about 23.).
